1.Start with the final total, not the nightly rate

Set the same check-in date, check-out date, number of guests and room type on every site you compare. Continue far enough to see the full price breakdown, but do not complete the purchase until you have checked the terms.

Example: A $145 room for three nights appears to cost $435. After $68 in taxes and a $35 nightly destination fee, the stay total becomes $608.

2.Look for resort, destination and property fees

Mandatory property fees may cover facilities such as Wi-Fi, a gym, pool access or local calls, even when you do not plan to use them. Check whether the fee is already included, due at the property or charged per room, per person or per night.

3.Confirm which taxes are included

Sales tax, occupancy tax, city tax and tourism levies vary by destination. Some local charges may be payable at check-in and may not be part of the online total. Read the price details and property policy rather than relying on the headline rate.

4.Price parking before choosing the location

A central hotel with expensive valet parking can cost more than a slightly higher-priced property with free parking. If you will rent a car, check overnight rates, taxes, in-and-out privileges and nearby public garages.

5.Value breakfast and other extras realistically

Breakfast included can be valuable for a family, but less useful if you leave early or prefer a nearby café. The same applies to airport transfers, lounge access and late checkout. Count an extra only when you would otherwise pay for it.

6.Match the cancellation and payment rules

A non-refundable rate and a flexible rate are not equivalent products. Check the cancellation deadline in the hotel's local time, whether the first night or the full stay becomes non-refundable, and whether payment is taken now or at the property.

Useful rule: If your plans could change, treat flexibility as part of the price rather than choosing the lowest non-refundable offer automatically.

7.Check currency and card charges

When the property charges in a different currency, the final amount can change with the exchange rate. Your bank may also charge a foreign transaction fee. If a site offers currency conversion, compare its displayed rate with your card issuer's likely rate.
